My thoughts of Steve Keenan

I have a warm memory of Steve Keenan and am sorry I haven't seen him for too many years.  When Nancy and I learned of his illness, I was thinking of how we could visit, only to hear of his sudden passing.  His work is now at an end and I hope he enjoyed many years of contentment and relaxation with his children, grandchildren and friends.

I always enjoyed talking with Steve, when Nancy and I were courting and young marrieds.  He was inquisitive, engaged, interested in events of the day.  He always had a point of view I could appreciate, and often agree.  Of course, it seemed to me there was nothing he liked more than a humorous remark or tale.

Ever since I had cars, it seems to me I was always buying new replacement or new snow tires.  When Steve had his own business in or around Sparta, I bought from him.  I recall a young fellow NJ National Guard Army Reserve officer like myself, stationed as I was at an armory in Newton, who needed tires and I introduced him to Steve.  I think my father bought tires from him.  We were always satisfied.  Steve worked harder with his hands than I ever wanted to.

His children were his joy, as youngsters and as young adults.  He was proud of them all and, I believe, never judgmental.  As the decades go by, and one constantly reads or hears of corrupt men, thieves, people whose overriding priority is to serve themselves first and always, it is good to remember Steve Keenan.  An honest man who accepted you as you were, asked for nothing, was happy for simple gatherings and the time spent.  "Aye, Johnnie, we were glad to know ye."

Uncle Steve, the brother of my mother Mary, was for many years a part of our family, he lived with us in London before the war and during the blitz and also when we moved to Kent and then eventually to Leicester. During the war years my Dad was away in the British army and Uncle Steve was a rock who was greatly loved by us all, he was my hero. I was heartbroken when he went to the States but was delighted when he met and married Dee. His regular visits back to England were a joy. I have such wonderful memories which I treasure of this gentle, kind, very generous and lovable man.

I want to express my sincere sympathy to both you and your family, Merrill, at this most difficult time.  Your devotion to your Dad was a beautiful reflection of a wonderful daughter. He now is at peace.
