He was born on July 15, 1945, in Hackensack, New Jersey, to George Govignon and Eleanor Wood. Richard graduated from Duncan U. Fletcher High School in Neptune Beach, Florida, before earning his degree from Florida State University. During his time in college, he participated in the U.S. Army ROTC Program and entered the military shortly after graduation. Richard proudly served his country in the Vietnam War, where he was awarded the Bronze Star for his exemplary professional duties and missions. He continued serving in the reserves in military intelligence and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel with over 20 years of service.
Richard furthered his education, obtaining a Master’s Degree in Forensic Science from George Washington University and had a career in security and forensics. Richard is survived by his three children: Richard Govignon, Jr. (Cynthia), Georgine Ragsdale (Matthew), and Nicole Conkling (Charles), along with six beloved grandchildren: Andre Govignon, Mason Govignon, James Ragsdale, Ridgely Ragsdale, Olivia Conkling, and Charles Conkling, III. He is also survived by his brother, George Govignon, mother of his children Linda Venninger Govignon and predeceased by his sister, Carol Govignon.
In his later years, Richard retired in Gadsden, Alabama, before returning to Sparta, New Jersey, to care for his Uncle Edward. He was known for his kindness, intelligence, endless stories and commitment to family. Richard will be remembered for his unwavering spirit, dedication to his family, love for his country and the many lives he touched during his time with us.
A private service was held with immediate family to honor Richard Govignon’s life. A formal funeral will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date, where he will be laid to rest. Further details will be shared once arrangements are finalized.
