Christopher (Chris) Justin McCarthy, 58, of Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey, passed away on May 25, 2022. Chris was born in Denville, New Jersey, to Edward McCarthy and Dorothy Dooley McCarthy on January 13, 1964. He married Susan Lindemann on September 7, 2003 at Kirkpatrick Cathedral, Rutgers College.
Chris graduated from Roxbury High School in 1982 and received his BA in Political Science and English from Rutgers University-New Brunswick in 1986. He received a JD from Rutgers Law School in Newark in 1989 and then was admitted to the New Jersey Bar. In his law career, Chris first worked for Wolff & Samson in Roseland, then joined McCarter & English in Newark, and became a partner at Robinson, Burns & McCarthy in Bridgewater, where he practiced law until he opened an independent law practice. Chris practiced corporate law and general litigation.
Chris is preceded in death by his parents, Edward McCarthy and Dorothy McCarthy Dedrick. He is survived by his wife, Susan McCarthy, his daughter Devan, his son Justin, and his sister, Helene McGill. Chris is survived by loving in-laws, Joe McGill, Stephen and Karen Eley, Nelson and Heidi Surovetz and five nieces, Kate and Alex McGill, Julia, Maggie and Cara Eley and friends. He also loved his pets, as he considered them his family members.
While at Rutgers University, Chris' Catholic faith was ignited, and burned brightly throughout his life. Chris was also a huge sports fan, played basketball for Roxbury High School and was an ardent follower and supporter of Rutgers football and basketball, attending many games with his family. Chris also was a member of the Rutgers Football boards and was a sports news contributor for a USA Today writer.
His love of music ranging from opera and Broadway to his beloved '80s New Wave Alternative music, he loved to dance and sing and celebrate life in every way. Chris enjoyed and loved birding and nature, and pursued these interests at home, in Costa Rica, and elsewhere with his family. Chris also loved history and politics and would engage in conversation with all who would participate with him and always eager to help his kids with their History homework.
His children were his absolute joy, and his words and wisdom will remain a guiding light in their lives. Devan will proudly continue the McCarthy legacy by attending Rutgers University this September.
Family and friends are invited to visit Tuesday May 31, from 4-7 pm at Goble Funeral Home, 22 Main St, Sparta, NJ 07871. A funeral mass will be held Wednesday June 1, at 11 am at Our Lady of the Lake Church, 294 Sparta Ave, Sparta, NJ.
