Alice was born, raised, and lived in Oak Ridge, New Jersey for more than forty years, where she met and married her husband, Robert U. Norman. Alice was the oldest of seven children of John and Violet Chardavoyne. From a young age, she was hard-working and determined to provide for her family. She was selfless, giving, and filled with love for family and friends. She worked at the United States Post Office and Sears and Roebucks, among other more colorful jobs like working at a hot dog stand, and driving a fuel truck for her family’s business.
Alice and Robert decided to forge a new life for themselves in what was then the small and sparsely populated area of Central Florida. They moved to Altamonte Springs, Florida, a suburb of Orlando, in the early 1970s, building a home for themselves and their two young sons, Scott and Todd. Alice made a loving home for them, true to her nature, never moving from the home she built with her husband shortly after their arrival. To her joy, she was later joined in Florida by her siblings, June, Marilyn and John, whom everyone knew as “Bud”. She spent time with them and their spouses, Gerald Zeek and Kate Chardavoyne. Despite the distance between them, she also kept in regular contact with her brother, Henry, and her sister, Wanda, as well as her nieces and nephews. She spoke to Wanda nearly every day.
Preceded in death by her parents, Violet (nee Jennings) and John Depeyster Chardavoyne, her brother John, her sister Carolyn Paffenroth, and her son, Scott; Alice is survived by her son, Todd, his wife Lisa, and her beloved grandchildren, Dylan and Ella. She is also survived by siblings whom she adored - June, Wanda, Marilyn, and Henry.
Alice’s grandchildren, Dylan and Ella, were the light of her later years. They came to her after she reached the youthful age of 70, but that did not dissuade her from playing with them, climbing their treehouse, picking oranges together from the trees in her backyard, and pushing them around on a toy train, which gave her the nickname that they still call her today - “Toot Toot.”
A brief celebration of Alice’s long life will be held Friday, June 28, 2024 from 1:00p.m – 2:00p.m. with a service at 1:30p.m. at Goble Funeral Home, 22 Main Street, Sparta, NJ 07871.
