“Vic” or “Nana Bic” lived a full and vibrant life from beginning to end and touched the lives of many people along the way.
She leaves behind many who love her including her brother, Thadd Lewis Stone, son, Matthew Scott Spencer, daughter, Kara Shea Herring and her husband Bonner Davis Herring, grandchildren Sawyer Davis Herring and Summer Shea Herring, and countless others, both near and far, that were more than friends. They were family.
Born in Salisbury, NC on November 28, 1946, Vicki dedicated her life to learning. With a hunger for knowledge, she graduated from Appalachian State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Library Science, and immediately began a career in education, both as a teacher and librarian. She later continued her studies at UNC-Chapel Hill as a graduate of the Realtor’s Institute. And finally, on to Duke University to study at the Institute of Nonprofit Management.
She moved to Oak Island in 1978 and began to immerse herself in all things community. She was a great believer in volunteerism. She served on the Board of Directors of the Southport-Oak Island Chamber of Commerce, Commissioner of the USS NC Battleship Memorial, Brunswick County Coordinator of the Cape Fear Area United Way, and longtime 4th of July Festival Committee member, serving as Festival President in 1990. She joined the Southport Lions Club and became the first woman President of the organization in 1996.
Her career highlights were vast and her colleagues at the State Port Pilot, Margaret Rudd & Associates, Brunswick Community College, Carolina Power & Light, and Florida Power & Light - Energy Encounter were so dear to her. Vicki paved the way at BCC, being the first Resource Development officer and as the Executive Director of the BCC Foundation. She is remembered for many initiatives in her short time there and was instrumental in obtaining the largest gift, at that time, to any NC Community College, the $500,000 Odell Williamson endowment which helps support the management of the BCC Odell Williamson Auditorium. Her fundraising philosophy was friend-raising before fundraising and weeklong campus fun(d) drives were centered around activities encouraging fun for all.
Surprisingly, she found time for play amidst her work life, and enjoyed numerous hobbies – reading the newspaper when it first arrived at 3am, gin rummy, Yahtzee, organizing (and then reorganizing), caring for her orchids and fur-babies, crafts and tea parties with her grandkids, and treasure collecting. Perhaps her best treasures to gather were friends and she had a world-wide collection from all of her travels. After retirement, she took to traveling the world and made it to almost every continent. She will be remembered for many things, including a lover of Diet Dr. Pepper, the Today Show and Jeopardy, a fierce penny slots gambler, and a hunter of a good bargain and the “Hot Now” light at Krispy Kreme. Most of all she will be remembered for her smile that could light up a room, her gorgeous blue eyes, and her amazing hugs.
A big thank you to the staff of Coastal Pointe Memory Care for caring for Vicki in the last few years.
