Norman "Norm" Carl Johnson, 88, a long time resident of the Plantsville section of Southington, and our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle, passed into the arms of his Beloved Savior, Jesus Christ, early on August 20, 2014, in Fort Myers, FL where he has resided the last few years. He was born in New Britain on March 1, 1926 to the late Carl and Helen (Swanson) Johnson. His wife Lucille, son Donald, and sisters Charlotte, Dorothy and Audrey predeceased him.
Norm worked tirelessly to care for his family and after graduation from high school he joined the Navy and served as a Radioman Third Class in the Panama Canal Zone for 18 months during World War II. Upon his discharge, he returned to New Britain where he began his career as a Tool & Die Maker. He retired in 1990 from Fansteel as the Manager of Manufacturing Operations. He also served as a Director of the Citizens National Bank of Southington for many years and was involved with many other civic groups and The American Red Cross. He had a wonderful sense of humor which stayed with him until the end.
He was an avid Hartford Whalers fan and with his wife and son, were season ticket holders for over 20 years. He also enjoyed bowling and had passion for golf. He was a member of the Farms Country Club in Wallingford for over 40 years and continued to play in Florida until a couple of years before his death.
He is survived by his daughter Leanne Joyce White (Gregory) of Fort Myers, FL; daughter Sandra Ellen Anderson (Geoffrey Dates) of Ventura, CA; grandson Todd Howard (Erika Stone) of Ventura CA; granddaughter Kelly Joyce Gray (Jeffrey) of Newburyport, MA; grandson Jesse Howard (Kate) of Lee, MA; grandson Stephen Joyce (Monique) of Decatur, GA; grandson Jonathan Rossi of Boston, MA; granddaughter Lane Rossi of Woodstock, VT; and great grandchildren Jillian and Spencer Gray, Ethan and Harper Joyce, Bailey and Chloe Howard and Jude Howard. Norman is also survived by his sister Carol Johnson of Berlin, several nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews and many, many friends!
At Norm's request, he will be cremated and his remains buried alongside his beloved wife and son. A graveside service with Military Honors will be held on Saturday September 6 at 11 am at St. Thomas Cemetery, 209 Belleview Avenue, Southington. DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington is assisting the family with arrangements.
