It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my mother, Alison Schaefer Goff, long time resident of the Plantsville section of Southington. She passed away rather unexpectedly at the age of 63 on Dec. 22, 2022 at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington, CT with her daughter and her dearest friend by her side. Alison was the devoted wife of her late husband, Daniel Goff, whom she loved and missed dearly.
Born in Queens, NY on August 8, 1959, Alison was the daughter of the late Parker and Bette (Fairbairn) Schaefer. She spent her younger years living in Long Island, NY before the family moved to Tolland, CT where she would graduate from Tolland High School with the class of 1977, before going on to earn her bachelor’s degree from Salve Regina College in Newport, RI. Alison worked a long career in insurance at Allstate Ins. Co. (where she would meet the love of her life) and Middleoak Mutual Assurance Company. After an early retirement, she would proudly return to school to further her education, earning a certificate in Paralegal Studies, at the University of Hartford’s Barney School of Business. Most recently, Alison was working as a paraeducator at Southington High School, an opportunity she would say she was “blessed” to have.
Alison was a woman of deep faith and a very proud and devoted parishioner of former St. Thomas, now St. Luke’s in Southington. She attended Bible Study regularly and had looked forward to participating in a women’s prayer group she had recently joined. Alison surely followed in her mother’s footsteps as to her love for volunteering, and never missed out on an opportunity to give back to her community. Some of her favorites were putting together food baskets during the holiday season and hosting at the annual Passion Play. But above all else, teaching her beloved Catechism classes is what truly overflowed her heart with love and joy.
Alison’s daughter was the light of her life and her proudest accomplishment. Their time spent together, whether it be basking in the summer sun on the beach, playing a round of golf, or simply just enjoying each other’s company were the happiest moments of her entire life. She was truly committed to her love for not only her daughter but for her whole family and her many friends as well. Alison could often be found cooking for loved ones, tending to her gardens, laughing at some stand-up comedy, or sitting down to a new crossword puzzle. She truly was a special woman and her self-less love and quick wit will be missed dearly by all who knew her.
Besides her daughter, Caitlin Goff, Alison is survived by her step-son Brian and his wife Shannon Goff of Jacksonville, FL, her 2 step-daughters and their husbands, Sandy and Kevin Bailey of Decatur, GA, and Lindsay and Kasey Martin of Lilburn, GA, and all of their beautiful children. She is also survived by sister-in-law Liz and her husband Tom Smith of Bayport, NY, brother-in-law Bill Goff of Noyac, NY, her many nieces and nephews, and their children. Alison was predeceased by her husband, Dan Goff, and her parents, Parker and Bette (Fairbairn) Schaefer.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 11th from 4-7 pm at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main Street, Southington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 am the following morning Jan. 12th at St Dominic Church, 1050 Flanders Road, Southington. Everyone is asked to meet directly at church. Burial will follow in St. Thomas Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Alison’s memory to St. Luke Catholic Parish, 99 Bristol Street, Southington, CT. [email protected]
