Irene was a quality control inspector at Cord Laboratories in Detroit, MI for several years before they relocated the company to Denver, Co. She then joined the Linen Dept at St John Health Systems (which was then Holy Cross Hospital in Detroit, MI eventually becoming Linen Room Supervisor. She retired from Holy Cross Hospital and soon afterward began her volunteer career as a member of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Wayne County (RSVP) and working in the St John Northeast Community Hospital’s (formerly Holy Cross Hospital) Gift Shop for many years. She was particularly proud of her volunteer work at the hospital working 2-3 times a week. She logged well over 2000 hrs of service a year and was named Volunteer of the Year in 2002 for logging 2,676 hrs of service. She received numerous awards during her career.
Irene spent many hours listening to her favorite big band music, particularly Lawrence Welk, and watching the game show channel as well as Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. Her favorite hobby was doing Word Fill In puzzles, and just prior to her death she had completed a fresh book of 100 fill in puzzles in less than 2 weeks. She is deeply missed by her loving daughter as well as friends and neighbors. Irene is survived by her daughter Wanda Mroz.
There are no plans for a memorial service in the immediate future. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made in her name to any of her favorite charities: American Heart Association, VFW (Veteran’s of Foreign Wars) or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
