Thomas Joseph McCarthy

Thomas J. McCarthy, age 93, passed away on April 1, 2024, in Huntingdon Valley, PA. He was a long time resident of Warminster, PA. Thomas J. McCarthy was born on April 15, 1930 in Philadelphia, PA, to parents, John McCarthy and Margaret McCarthy (nee McGettigan).

He only completed up to 8th grade, ending his education to help support his family. He then went on to serve in the Army during the Korean War as an engineer. Thomas then went on to establish a career as a Truck Driver, working various jobs in the Philadelphia area, including driving for the PTC, SEPTA, delivering appliances, etc. He later started work in the recovery and removal of cinders.

Thomas and his brother, Robert started McCarthy Brothers Rubbish Removal. Their father, John helped when he was able. They decided to make the move to commercial rubbish removal, bringing the first ever front end loader trash trucks to the East Coast area. For over 35 years, they grew the business into one of the Delaware Valley’s larger private rubbish companies. After those long years together, they dissolved their partnership and went their ways. Both maintained stable and growing companies as individuals. When Thomas had to retire from the trash business due to medical issues, he healed and started to drive limousines and vans for a large carrier. He then moved on to driving buses for casino trips, skiing trips, etc. His last working position was with a Trolley Company in Philadelphia. He officially retired from driving at 87 years old.

Thomas was preceded in death by his father John, his mother Margaret (nee McGettigan), His brothers, John “Jack” and Robert.

Thomas is survived by his former wife Irene T. McCarthy (nee Gosse); his sons, Thomas Jr., John, and Robert; and his daughter, Kelly Anne. He is also survived by his four grandchildren; Lauren, Julie, Christian and Olivia; as well as his great grandson Declan.

He is to be cremated and his cremains to be shared by his loving family.
