Anna (Anne) Hollingsworth Pike, M.D. died on Monday June 27, 2011 at Lakeside at Willow Valley in Willow Street, PA. Born and raised in Moylan-Rose Valley, PA, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Perry Covington Pike and Anna Hollingsworth Armstrong Pike. She was 90 years of age.
Dr. Pike was a graduate and the class valedictorian of Nether Providence High School Class of 1938. She graduated from Swarthmore College in 1942, where she was pre-med and majored in Zoology. Anne was a member of the varsity hockey and basketball teams at Swarthmore and was the captain of the hockey team in her senior year. She also played the clarinet in the college orchestra.
Dr. Pike graduated from the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1946, on an accelerated wartime schedule. She passed her Pennsylvania State Boards in 1947, and then completed a 3-year residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Since there was an increased need for doctors at home bases during WWII, she accepted a 2 month appointment at Fort Knox, KY, on the army post. She was certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1955, becoming a Fellow and Diplomat of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
She was in a solo private practice in the East Falls section of Philadelphia until her retirement in 1985. She was noted for her expertise in surgery and delivery techniques and had received several commendations for her teaching abilities. She was on staff at the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania Hospital, Woman’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Chester Hospital, and Roxborough Memorial Hospital. During her years in practice she was appointed the consultant of Philadelphia General Hospital Northern Division, Eastern Pennsylvania Psychiatric Hospital, and Veteran’s Administration Hospital of Philadelphia. She co-authored several publications relative to her specialty. In 1986, Dr. Pike was appointed Clinical Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology Emeritus at the Medical College of Pennsylvania (now Drexel Medical School).
The professional organizations that she belonged to include: Alumni Association of the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, Delta Chapter of Pennsylvania, the Philadelphia County Medical Society, Pennsylvania Medical Society, the American Medical Association, and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Philadelphia.
Her hobbies included traveling and gardening; she was a former president of the Avalon New Jersey Garden Club. She was inducted into the Strath Haven (formerly Nether Providence) High School Wall of Fame in 2006.
Dr. Pike was the loving sister of Ruth Armstrong Pike Fooskas (who was predeceased by her husband James Fooskas) and the late Jane Smedley Pike Buxton (who is survived by her husband Philip T. Buxton). She is also survived by her nephew James Fooskas, Jr. and his wife Deborah (and their children Isabel Hope, Matilda Grace, and Adelaide Faith Fooskas), her nephew Stephen Perry Fooskas, M.D. and his wife Susan (and their children Jessica Frances Fooskas, Daryl Lynn Morgan, and Kelly Rae Morgan), and her nephew Robert Pike Fooskas and his wife Emily (and their children Alexa Marie and Robert Pike Fooskas, Jr.), as well as her dear friend and associate, Martha L. Biemuller, M.D.
Relatives and friends are invited to her funeral service Saturday July 9, 2011, 11 AM, at the Lamb Funeral Home (at Forest Hills), 101 Byberry Road, Huntingdon Valley, PA. The family will receive friends from 9 AM until the time of her service. The interment will follow in Forest Hills Cemetery. A memorial service in the Lancaster area will be held at the Ascension Lutheran Church, 600 East Penn Grant Road, Willow Street, PA 17584, on Saturday July 16, 2011 at 11 AM .
