Dr. James L. Merz

Jim was the second son born to Albert Joseph and Anne Elizabeth Merz. He is survived by his wife Rose-Marie, 4 children: Kathleen Cybulski (Barry), Jamie Merz, Michael Merz, and Kim Bogold (Bill). He is also survived by 9 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.

Jim received his bachelor’s degree from Notre Dame in 1959 and his PhD from Harvard in 1966. He was a research scientist at Bell Laboratories and a professor and Chair of the Department Electrical and Computer Engineering, Associate Dean for Research of the College of Engineering, and the Associate Vice Chancellor of the University at UCSB. He eventually returned to Notre Dame as the Freimann Chair of Electrical Engineering. During his tenure at Notre Dame he also served as the Vice President for Research and the Dean of the Graduate School and Interim Dean of the College of Engineering.

He loved God, his family, Notre Dame, Cape Cod, and traveling.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Jacob Sears Library in East Dennis.

Visitation will be held at 8:30-10:30 am on Tuesday, June 28 at Doane Beal & Ames Funeral Home, 729 Rt. 134, South Dennis. A Mass will be held at Our Lady of the Cape at 11:00 am: Burial to follow.
