Born in New Bedford, a son of the late Joseph and Dora (Davignon) Mendonca he was a lifelong area resident and a communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Parish, Dartmouth.
Nelson served in the National Guard for six years. Mr. Mendonca was a Lieutenant for the Dartmouth Fire Department District 1 for 28 years. He also worked as a marine mechanic for Concordia Boat Yard for 30 years.
Mr. Mendonca had lived at CareOne for seven years and in that time he became very popular with the residents and saw that all the resident’s needs were met. He was so popular that he served as President of the residents association at CareOne.
He is survived by his children, Louis Mendonca and his wife Susan of Melbourne, FL and Catherine Medeiros and her husband Manuel of Dartmouth; a brother, Joseph Mendonca, Jr. of Dartmouth; two grandchildren, Christopher Medeiros and Neil L. Mendonca and his wife Stephanie; two great grandchildren, Harrison Mendonca and Connor Medeiros; and many nieces and nephews.
His funeral will be Friday, May 6, 2022 at 9 a.m. from the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME at DARTMOUTH, 230 Russells Mills Road, Dartmouth, MA 02748 followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Catholic Parish, 795 Dartmouth St., Dartmouth.
