Manuel N. Costa, age 88, of South Dartmouth passed away on March 24, 2019 at Brandon Woods of Dartmouth after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was the husband of the late Maria (Sousa) Costa of South Dartmouth.
Born and raised on the island of Sao Miguel in the Azores, he was the eldest son of the late Manuel and Angelina Verisimo Costa. The oldest of seven children, he immigrated to Ontario, Canada in 1956 at the age of 25 where he worked tirelessly for 8 years, sending most of what he earned back to the old country to help bring 5 of his siblings to Canada. In 1964, he moved to the United States where he married his childhood friend and the love of his life, Maria Sousa. Manuel and Maria settled in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts where they lived for the remainder of their lives.
Mr. Costa was a proud member of the United Auto Workers and was employed for many years as a machinist for Borg Warner Automotive. He was a kind, selfless and hardworking family man who enjoyed gardening, making his own wine, watching soccer and hockey games on TV, and spending time with his two granddaughters who he loved very much. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in New Bedford.
Mr. Costa is survived by a son, Michael Costa and his wife Anna of Walpole; two brothers, Gil Da Costa of Taunton and Jose Costa of Ontario, Canada; two sisters, Maria Sousa of Ontario, Canada and Gloria Claudio of Sao Miguel, Azores; and two granddaughters, Mia and Laura. He was the brother of the late Joao Costa of Fall River and Gilherme Costa of Taunton.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 28, 2019 at 9:30AM from the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME at DARTMOUTH, 230 Russells Mills Road, Dartmouth, followed by a funeral mass at 10:30AM in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, 230 Bonney Street, New Bedford. Burial will follow at the South Dartmouth Cemetery at 507 Elm Street, South Dartmouth. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 to 8PM.
