Mrs. Lillian D. Alfonse ( Ribeiro) passed away peacefully on May 2, 2020 at Brandon Woods in Dartmouth, at the age of 101. Lillian was born in Dartmouth in 1918, and lived there for most of her life. She spent the World War II years living in New York helping her sisters while working in the garment trade, and waiting for her sweetheart, Charles, who fought for our Country in the U.S. Navy. They were married for 56 years after he came home in November 1945, until his passing in 2001.
Over the years Lillian had worked as a seamstress sewing clothing, curtains, and bags for the fishing industry. She enjoyed crafting homemade braided rugs, knitting, preserving fruit and vegetables, and was very fond of gardening. Her true calling in life was providing a warm and beautiful home for her family where guests were always welcome, and a plate of her deliciously unique and inspired cooking could always be found. She was also devoted member of St. Mary’s Parish of South Dartmouth for almost 70 years.
During her stay at Brandon Woods, she was especially happy when talking to her caregivers and friends in her first language, Portuguese, sharing the stories of her 101 years of a full life. The history she had seen – and lived!!
She is survived by a daughter, Joanne M. Maura and her husband, Edward O’Melia, her son-in-law Mario D. Maura, Jr., her loving granddaughter, Alicia C. Bedient and her husband Matthew Bedient, and great-granddaughter, Cameron E. Bedient. She also had two godchildren, Shirley Perry and Joyce Ann Travers, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Due to social restrictions at this time, services are private. A Memorial Mass will be scheduled at St. Mary’s Church in South Dartmouth at a later date for all to attend. In-lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to your favorite charity in her name.
Arrangements are in the care of WARING-SULLIVAN HOME AT DARTMOUTH, 230 Russells Mills Rd., Dartmouth. For on-line tributes please visit our website at: www.waring-sullivan.com
