Dr. Harry Von Ertfelda, a physician who practiced medicine in New Bedford for more than 50 years, recently passed away at home at the age of 85. Born in Upstate NY in 1936, Harry was the only son of Harry and Stephanie Von Ertfelda, second generation immigrants to the US. From humble beginnings, Harry served in the Navy, put himself through the Georgetown University School of Medicine, founded his own private practice and worked tirelessly until the age of 83 caring for the people of New Bedford and Dartmouth. He was well-known within the community for his care, wit and generosity. A long-time resident of South Dartmouth and advocate for the environment, he placed his property under conservation with the DNRT. Endlessly curious and a lifelong learner, he was a talented carpenter, cook, race car enthusiast and antique collector. He enjoyed reading, gardening and slinging cocktails with his two sons. A great man, loved by patients, friends and family, Harry will be missed by all. He leaves behind his wife Kathy and sons Eric and Matthew. In lieu of funeral proceedings, a celebration of his remarkable life will be planned for next year.
Arrangements are in the care of the Waring-Sullivan Home at Dartmouth, 230 Russells Mills Rd., Dartmouth, MA 02748. To leave a note of condolence: www.waring-sullivan.com
