ELAINE G. (BLANCHARD) HAYES, 68, of New Bedford, passed away Monday, November 4, 2013, after a brief illness. She was the wife of David P. “Skip” Hayes, with whom she would have shared 43 years of marriage on November 15th of this year.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Edmund and Philomen (Thibeault) Blanchard, she was a life-long resident of the area.
Elaine graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in Fairhaven and St. Anne’s Hospital School of Nursing in Fall River. She worked at Mass General Hospital as Head Nurse in the White Six Unit for several years before moving to New Bedford in the early 1970s. She then worked at St. Luke’s for several years and then became an Instructor in the L.P.N. program at
Diman Vocational High School.
She was very involved with her children’s school as they were growing up, volunteering to run the schools very own chess club, which many students excitedly become members of. Elaine was a Master Knitter, knitting many things for her family and friends and most recently selling many of her knitted items at the Stonebridge Farmer’s Market in Acushnet.
Besides her husband she is survived by her son Brendan Richard and his fiancée Victoria L’Etoile and was the mother of the late David P. Hayes III.
She is also survived by one sister; cousins, Patricia Handcock and Anne Vigent and many other cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by one brother and one sister.
Her funeral service will be held Friday, November 8, 2013 at 11 AM in the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute, 230 Russells Mills Rd., Dartmouth. Visiting hours, Thursday 5-8 PM. Burial in Acushnet Cemetery.
