Alice (Gomes) Arruda passed away on September 4, 2013 peacefully in her sleep. She was 101 years old and was born in Bombarrel, Portugal and lived her life in Dartmouth. She was the beloved wife of the late Herbert “Bucky” Arruda, owner of J.B. Lumber, South Dartmouth and Richards and Davis Lumber in Tiverton.
She is survived by her son Robert Arruda of Portsmouth, her daughter, Arlene McNamee and her husband James of New Bedford, grandchildren: Lisa Arruda Carney and her husband Scott, Rebecca and Scott Arruda all of Dartmouth, Aaron James McNamee of New Bedford and Julie McNamee Gillespie of Bell Isle, Florida, great-grandchildren: Alexia Smith and Molly and Nora Gillespie. She had survived her best friend and sister: Gertrude Gonsalves - mother of Richard Gonsalves and Doreen Gonsalves-Silva and their children.
She was a member of the New Bedford Country Club for over 50 years- the oldest active member of the club. Her family sincerely thanks the Administration and all the staff for their special kindness during the years.
Her family would also like to thank all the staff of the Cedars of Lebanon Assisted Living Residence in Dartmouth for all their help and assistance and also for the love and support of the Community Nurse and Hospice Care during her final days.
Her funeral will be held Saturday, September 7, 2013 at 9am at St. Mary’s Church, 783 Dartmouth St. Dartmouth. Relatives and friends invited. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her honor may be made to the Sister Rose Network, c/o Catholic Social Services, 1600 Bay St. Fall River, MA 02724. Burial Private.
