Rose C. (Saulino) Sasso, 83, died quietly in the presence of her nephews and the comfort of those who loved and cared for her at the Clifton Rehabilitative Nursing Center in Somerset on Tuesday morning, July 5, 2011. She had resided in the Columbus Park neighborhood of Fall River for most of her life prior to becoming a resident of The Inn at Clifton in Somerset in December, 2007. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph M. Sasso.
Rose was born in Fall River the youngest child of the late Alfonso F. Saulino, Sr. and the late Carmela A. (Sisca) Saulino. She was a graduate of the former Sacred Hearts Academy, Class of 1946 and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Immaculata University in Pennsylvania in 1950. In 1953, Rose was awarded her Masters Degree in Education from Bridgewater State College, now Bridgewater State University and pursued advanced education at both Bridgewater and the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth.
An educator, Rose was employed as an elementary school teacher by the Fall River Public School System for over forty years prior to her retirement in 1993. She had taught at the former Longfellow School in her early career but spent the majority of her working days teaching third and fourth grade and reading at the former Ralph M. Small Elementary School.
Rose was a lifelong and proud member and communicant of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Church. Long active in her parish community, she was a charter member and served as the first secretary of the Holy Rosary Women’s Guild. Throughout her years of membership in the guild, Rose served as the president and in other offices and capacities. She had also served as a chair of the Festa Italiana Committee as well as the chair and as a collector for the Catholic Charities Appeal, a member of the parish Centennial Committee in 2004 and a longtime member of the Altar and Rosary Society. She has also served as president of the District Council of Catholic Women. In 1995 her dedication to her parish was recognized when she was the awarded the Marian Medal from then Bishop Sean O’Malley, OFM., Cap..
Prior to its’ merger with the Loggia Vittorio Veneto # 1035 Order Sons of Italy in America, she was a member of the Loggia Giovenezza # 1296, Order Sons of Italy in America, having served as its’ Venerable for several terms. She continued her membership in the lodge until her death. She was a member of the Fall River, Bristol County and Massachusetts Retired Teacher’s Associations, as well as the Retired Educators Association of Massachusetts, Bristol Chapter, the Sacred Hearts and Immaculata University Alumnae Associations and the Bridgewater State College Alumni Association. She was also a life member of the Friends of the Fall River Public Library and a member of the Retired Fall River Municipal Employees Association and the Fall River Opera Group
Throughout her life she enjoyed knitting, painting, basket weaving, reading, the opera, writing notes to family and friends but most importantly being kind to those she met along life’s way.
She is survived by her nephews, Alphonse F. Saulino, III and his wife Leonora, Michael S. Saulino, Attorney John E. Saulino and Thomas A. Spear and niece Rosemary Rockwood and several grandnieces and grandnephews. In addition to her husband Ralph Rose was preceded in death by her siblings, Alphonse F. Saulino, Jr. who died on March 17th of this year, Mary Saulino Ponte, Florence P. Spear and Ferdinand G. Saulino, her sister-in-law, Helen D. Saulino and her beloved nephew, Joseph C. Saulino.
Her funeral will take place on Friday morning, July 8, 2011 at 9:00 o’clock from the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Rose E. Sullivan, 866 County Street, Somerset, MA followed by her concelebrated funeral mass at 10:00 o’clock in Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Church, 120 Beattie Street, Fall River. Committal prayers and interment will be in St. Patrick Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday, July 7, 2011 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm.
