Sondra Strugatch passed peacefully at her home surrounded by loved ones on July 15, 2024. She considered herself fortunate to have lived the life she had led. Born on March 23, 1932 to Mae Blattner (ne Teff) and Samuel Blattner in Brooklyn, NY she grew up next door to a movie theatre, her parents owned a candy shop, and she would meet her three life-long friends in the hallway of their tenement building when she was just seven years old. She felt lucky to have been raised by two parents who, despite the Depression, managed to provide for her so that she never felt deprived. She quickly learned what was important to her in life; friends, carving your own path, and an unexpected one-liner. While attending an event for young singles, she met her husband Jack. They would be together 54 years and shared many cultural interests including art, music, dance, reading and a love of New York which she retained all her life. Together they would have two children; a son Warren Strugatch and a daughter Ellen Strugatch and three grandchildren: Evelyn Strugatch, Andrea Krakovsky and Arianna Griffin. She gave herself permission to pursue what interested her at a time when women were encouraged to follow their man rather than their dreams. She had always enjoyed art and crafting and parlayed that into a fulfilling career that lasted decades and set the standard in her field. Once retired, she and Jack joined their daughter in Atlanta and were very close with their grandchildren, especially when they were young. At the age of 85 she moved in with Ellen and her son-in-law Bret Lowery and continued to live life on her own terms: reading voraciously, surprising herself at her own one-liners, and surrounding herself with what was most important to her. She was a woman who held tightly to how she understood the world, clear and assured in her own point of view. In the end, she was strong, loving, committed and funny. Very, very funny. She will be missed.
A graveside service for Sondra will be held Monday, July 22, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Eternal Hills Memory Gardens, 3700 Stone Mountain Hwy, Snellville, GA 30039.
