Sharon Kae Lantis McCollum passed away peacefully on November 1, 2024, at the age of 81. Born in Topeka, Kansas, Sharon worked in her family’s restaurant as a young woman, where she learned the values of hard work and community. At 17, she met the love of her life, Jim McCollum, and they fell deeply in love from their very first date. Exactly one year later, they married, beginning a beautiful partnership that would span 63 wonderful years.
Throughout their life together, Sharon and Jim embraced the spirit of adventure. From their home in Atlanta, they moved to Germany when Jim accepted a new role within the FAA, an opportunity that allowed them to explore Europe together. During their time abroad, Sharon worked in the U.S. Diplomatic Courier Office, proudly serving her country in a unique way. She held fond memories of their travels, with Prague being a place of particular joy. After their time overseas, they returned to Atlanta, where they spent over 30 years together, with their lives centered around their cherished grandchildren, Gavin and Keaton.
Sharon’s warmth and zest for life were evident to all who knew her. An avid tennis player, she was known for her competitive spirit and love of the game. She was also a dedicated fan of the Atlanta Braves and enjoyed staying up-to-date with the news. Above all, Sharon valued family, and she will be remembered for her bright spirit, sharp wit, and compassionate heart. Preceded in death by her beloved husband Jim in February 2024, her memory lives on through her son Jim Jr., his wife Laura, and her grandchildren, Gavin and Keaton.
A joint service to honor the lives of both Sharon and Jim will be held in December at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA, with the exact date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sharon’s memory may be made to [charity or organization].
