La Retha Jewell Lattimore affectionately known as "Mom" was born in Dallas, Texas to the late Rev. James Walter Jones and the late Lena La Blaun Metcalf Jones on July 16, 1925. In 1931, La Retha began her formal education at Phyllis Wheatley Elementary School and continued her education at Lincoln High School, where she received her High School Diploma on January 29, 1943. She accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior at an early age and dedicated her life to Him. She was a member of Church of God in Christ under the pastoral guidance of Bishop Ben Crouch. For years, she was an active member of the choir and was called upon constantly to grace the congregation by performing solos with her angelic voice. La Retha was married twice, first on October 14, 1942 to the late Leon Edward Miller which lasted 25 years and ended in divorce. La Retha met, fell in love and wedded in Holy Matrimony the late Leonard Leroy Lattimore on January 29, 1971. Between the two marriages, they had seven beautiful children, Leonard, Jr. of Sagus, CA, La Rochelle of Lawrenceville, GA, La Deitrich of Walnut Creek, CA, Sheldon, deceased, Brian of San Fernando, CA, L'Tanya of Bellflower, CA and Yvette of Dacula, GA. During La Retha's lifetime, she achieved many accomplishments which included, singing on the radio, graduating from Cosmetology School, modeling, conducting seminars entitled "The Power of Positive Thinking", recipient of the mother of the year award from the City of San Fernando, Recipient of the Home Beautification award from the City of Gardena (which she received on several occasions), Interior and Exterior decorating, seamstress, she was a member of the Law Enforcement as a police woman until she discovered that she was pregnant with her first born. La Retha was also an entrepreneur owning and operating three businesses, a Gas Station, a store called "My Store" and she retired from her home operated business as a hair stylist in 1967. La Retha leaves to mourn her loss, six children, one sister, twelve grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and friends. If La Retha were still with us, I know her words to us would be " Please don't cry for me, for to be absent in the spirit is to be present in the Lord."
