Maj. (Ret) Kay Michael Moon

Major Kay M. Moon (Retired) passed away on July 3, 2023 in Decatur, Georgia. Born in Pocatello, Idaho, on December 15, 1938, Kay was a career United States Army soldier and officer. He was the recipient of the Army’s Silver Star, and two Bronze Stars - two of the nations’ highest honors for heroic action in combat zones - along with multiple other military commendations.

As a Green Beret, Kay served in the Army’s elite forces during two tours of duty in the Vietnam War: 1964 - 1965 and 1969 - 1970. He was a highly respected Captain of the 199th Infantry Brigrade, 2nd PLt., Special Forces, 82nd and 101st Airborne in the Vietnam War, and after the war, was promoted to, and later retired as, a Major. After the Vietnam War, Kay worked with the Vinnell Corporation, training troops in Saudi Arabia to assist the U.S. Army. He later helped establish the telecommunications system during Operation Desert Storm.

Kay never wavered in his love of country or his commitment to sacrifice in the line of duty. A fierce U.S. Army soldier and warrior against America’s enemies, he was a beloved and devoted treasure to his family. Kay (known fondly as “Mickey” by his family and close friends) is predeceased by his cherished parents, retired U.S. Army officer, John Boyd Moon and Alice Moon. He is survived by his adored wife of 38 years, Sherry Moon. His is also survived by his daughters, Elke Cote of Bandon, Oregon; Kim Preston, of Stone Mountain, Georgia; and Greta Oehlert of Redmond, Washington, and Goddaughter Joanna Ruth Meyer Wire, in addition to his 5 grandchildren and multiple great-grandchildren.

Kay’s unwavering Faith in God, and his deep sense of personal responsibility, persevered through every challenge he faced in life. Captain (as he was called by his troops) loved staying in touch with his lifelong Vietnam War buddies, attending frequent veterans’ events around Atlanta, and across the country, with his dear wife Sherry. For many years, Kay felt honored to be an active partner in Georgia’s Newnan High School’s “Veterans Connect” program. Each year he was paired, and exchanged emails with, two different students (one per semester), who chose a special course to learn about the real Vietnam War and its Era from actual Vietnam Vets like Kay, who had lived it. At the end of the course came on of Kay’s favorite parts: the moment Vietnam Vets and “Veterans Connect” students got to meet each other in person. Kay enjoyed sharing real life stories of the Vietnam War, as he experienced them, that could not be found in textbooks.

A Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 11, from 4:00 – 8:00pm, at Eternal Hills, in Snellville, Georgia (3594 Stone Mountain Highway, Snellville, Georgia 30039). His Funeral Service will be held the following day on Wednesday, July 12, at Eternal Hills (3594 Stone Mountain Highway, Snellville, Georgia 30039), with Internment following, at 2:00pm, at Georgia National Cemetery (a Veterans Administration military cemetery), in Canton, Georgia (1080 Scott Hudgens Drive, Canton, Georgia 30114). A Reception will be held following the Interment at the Moons' residence, 1232 Elegante Ct., Stone Mountain, Georgia 30083
