Jim was born on May 24, 1930 to Herbert and Mildred Senour Schell of Vermillion, South Dakota. He earned an Undergraduate Degree from the University of South Dakota and a Graduate Degree in Political Science at the University of Kansas. He pursued his Doctorate Degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison which lead to a Political Science Professorship at Emory University. Jim served in the United States Navy as an Air Intelligence Officer. He retired from the United States Chamber of Commerce in 1994 after twenty two years of service.
Jim was a member of St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church where he taught Sunday school for many years. Previously he was a Deacon and Elder at Northminster Presbyterian Church in Macon, GA. He enjoyed volunteering in the community through his church and other organizations such as the Telephone Pioneers. Jim was an avid reader and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He excelled in basketball and track and field in his high school and college years. Over the years he enjoyed tennis, fishing, crabbing and camping.
Jim is survived by his wife of 40 years, Edna of Peachtree Corners, GA; children: daughter, Priscilla (Jim Choate) of Anacortes, WA; son, Scott (Kathy) of Richmond Hill, GA; grandchildren: Chelsea (Scott Bennett), Nicholas, Savannah and Tyler; great grandchild: Brighton Bennett as well as many beloved extended relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; younger brother, Allan and sister-n-law, Joyce. The family would also like to thank and acknowledge the caregivers at the Mansions at Sandy Springs Assisted Living Center.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, September 10, 2021 at St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church in Dunwoody, GA following a private family viewing and burial service. In lieu of flowers the family invites donations in Jim’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church.
