Barbara Elaine Kelvin-Ashton passed away on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at the tender age of 42. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends that she had touched in some small way throughout her short, yet very memorable life.
Barbara was born on December 9, 1975 in Montego Bay, Jamaica to Easton Kelvin and Monica Smithson. A quiet, studious child, Barbara was known by her family and friends to be sharp, smart, solitary and fashionable. Barbara migrated to the United States in August 1986 where she resided in Brooklyn, NY. She grew up in a large, loving family with her four sisters.
She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1994 and went on to excel and graduate from Long Island University with a BA in Psychology in 1998. Barbara was a closet geek. She would never studied, but always passed with flying colors, received honors and excellent grades.
Barbara and her family moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 2004. She then married Lewis Ashton on June 20, 2009 in Atlanta. Barbara had four beautiful children. Matthew, Dillon, Savanah and Joshua. She raised her four children with patience, discipline and humility. She loved her children, they were her world, her “rays of sunshine.”
While in Georgia, Barbara worked as a Disease Investigator for Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness. She worked there for many years until her health prevented her from performing her duties.
Barbara professed her life to Christ on February 14, 2013. She cherished praising the Lord, loved reading her Bible, especially
with her children nightly, praying for and with others. She was famed for her love of decorating, her cooking and her unique sense of style. She had a unique signature look and took fashion cues from no one. No matter how hard you tried, her distinctive look was admired by many and was hard to duplicate. She was also fond of saying a phrase that she coined…“Oh, Whoa!” I can hear her saying it now…
Barbara truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures: spending time and chatting with friends and family, laughing, and always wearing a smile on her face. She had an uncanny ability to reach people in a deep and positive way. As a result of her generous spirit and pleasant personality, she was loved by many. She was a generous soul with a forgiving and understanding heart. She was an example to everyone that she met of how to live life.
Barbara’s love of God was evident throughout her Christian journey and it was as beautiful as the flowers that she loved so much. Her influence will forever remain in the lives of all who knew her. She was a loving and caring, a devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt, and a valuable friend… Always thinking, and putting others first…. “To know her was to love her.”
Barbara’s life would seem too short to many, but those who were touched by her understood that the quality of her existence far exceeds the quantity of time in which she lived.
Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her husband, Lewis Ashton, and her children: Matthew Chung, Dillon Chung, Savannah Ashton, and Joshua Ashton; her parents: Easton Kelvin and Monica Smithson; her brothers and sisters: Patrick Parkin, Shernett Parkin, Gary Stewart, Karen Bennett, Carl Kelvin, Desrene Rhatigan, Angeline Kelvin-Joseph and Marcia Kelvin, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
