1942-2015
Cornville – Rowena E. Staples, 73, passed away peacefully with her family at her side on August 12, 2015. She was born and raised in Hartland the daughter of Leroy and Mary (Nichols) Whitten. Rowena married Guy Staples and for a time they raised their family in Massachusetts before returning to Maine in the early 1970’s. Rowena worked as an LPN at a mental health facility in Massachusetts, Sanfield Living Center in Hartland for 20 years and then for a short time at Woodlawn Rehab in Skowhegan. She took great joy in people both the people she cared for as a nurse and her family. Rowena loved to spend time with her family. She enjoyed cooking, reading, and fishing. Rowena was a collector of many things including over 200 nativity scenes. Every year she looked forward to the 10mile Yard Sale – rain or shine.
Rowena is predeceased by her husband; parents; son, Kenneth Staples; daughter, Jennifer (Staples) Dickerson; grandsons Ralph and Zachariah Holt and Rusty and Devon Staples.
She is survived by her children, Russell Staples and wife Kathleen, Lisa Holt and Chris Staples; grandchildren, Cody, Seth, Levi, Angela, Jessica, Nicholas, Carter, Benjamin, Gabrielle, Abraham, and Kenneth; 9 great grandchildren; 6 step grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Lisa Staples; siblings, David Whitten and wife Cheryl, Barbara Morse and Susan Robinson and husband Aubrey; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of Rowena’s life will be held at 2pm, Sunday, August 16, 2015 at Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan with the Rev. Mark Tanner officiating.
Rowena’s family extends their appreciation to the nurses and staff at Maine General Hospice for their excellent care and compassion.
