He was born on February 6, 1938 in Mercer, Maine to Belva S. Works and Forrest Stevens.
He graduated from Skowhegan Area High School in 1956. After graduating, he joined the National Guard.
He worked in shoe manufacturing and construction, but he was a self-employed carpenter most of his working life. He built, remodeled, repaired and maintained many homes and camps in the Belgrade Lakes Region.
He belonged to the Lebanon Masonic Lodge No. 116 in Norridgewock, Maine. He enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting and boating, but he most enjoyed spending time with his family. He looked forward to walking with his dog and constant companion, Casey, everyday.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Christine (Tina) Stevens; his three children, their spouses and his three grandchildren, Julie and Skip Giroux and their daughter, Abigail, Barbara and Gerald Stevens, Jr. and their son Cody, and Jodie and Adam Krea and their son, Matthew; one sister, Caroline Everett; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and many wonderful friends.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday March 9, 2013 at 1 p.m. at the Skowhegan Federated Church, Island Ave., Skowhegan, with the Rev. Mark Tanner officiating. A private burial will be held in the spring at the Village Cemetery in Smithfield, Maine.
The family would like to thank the oncology staff at Maine General Health in Augusta for their kindness and thoughtfulness.
