Skowhegan - Charles "Chub" Richard McGray, 80, passed away in Skowhegan after a short illness on September 20, 2023. He was born in Skowhegan on March 9, 1943, the son of Jarvis McGray (Kenney) and Cecil McGray.
Charles was raised in Skowhegan and attended Skowhegan schools. He married Lera McGray (Higgins) on June 12, 1965, and they raised two sons together in Skowhegan.
Charles was known to be a jokester and enjoyed playing pranks on people whenever he had a chance, those closest to him will remember that fondly. In his spare time Charles, along with his wife Lera liked to operate their HAM radio his call sign was N1STL. He also enjoyed going to different fairs during the summer, especially to visit his brother Stan and get some of his famous french fries as well as sausage from Buchino's footlong sausage. Charles was a fan of NASCAR and WWE you could always find him watching the races on Sunday and WWE on Monday and Friday. He also liked country music and you could usually find him whistling a tune or making up his own songs.
Charles is survived by his sons Cecil McGray, Charles McGray Jr and his fiancé Tamara Clark; grandchildren Kendra McGray, Regan Patten, Charles McGray III, and Jayce McGray; brother Stanley McGray, sister Rosemarie Crockett and partner William Bishop; nephew Mark Crockett; and special friends Toni Godin and Harvey Austin
He was predeceased by his parents; his wife Lera, brother George "Gig" Kelley, nephew David Crockett, and friends Neil Woodard, Gerald "Buzz" McClintick, and Anita McClintick.
The Family would like to say thank you to Megan at Beacon Hospice for the care she provided him and making his last few days as peaceful as possible.
A funeral service will be held from 12-2p.m., Tuesday, October 10, 2023 at Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan with Rev. Mark Tanner officiating. Family and friends are invited to visit from 12p.m. until the time of the funeral. Interment at Southside Cemetery in Skowhegan will follow immediately after funeral services.
