She is survived by her two sisters Carol (Ron) Glomski and Lois (Sam) DeSanto and her beloved children, James (Jane) Valere, Jeanette (Joe) Hakey, Kathryn (Tom) Anderson, and Mary Teresa Duane; 9 grandchildren, James
& Laura Valere, Dwayne Hakey, Sara (Joshua) Johnke, Jennifer Hakey, Heather (Ty) Nelson, Erica (Christopher) Heider, Jonathan & Amanda Anderson; and 14 great grandkids. She loved her nieces and nephews, her cousins and their children, and cherished her friends.
Shirley devoted her life to her children and held jobs including a homemaker, admin., catering and was a talent
ed seamstress who could sew anything from clothing to custom draperies & upholstery.
After graduating from E.T.H.S. in Evanston, she married and lived for a time in Key West and Panama. She admired ingenuity, our military personnel, right-action, self-discipline, and ‘smart dressers’. In mar
riage she gained 3 surnames (Valere, Humpley, Duane) and had 5 children, one stillborn.
Shirley was genuine, a seeker; she loved nature’s precision and wildness; compassionate toward those with no voice and not least, an engaging storyteller. Her zest for life was evidenced by many varied interests and creative skills. She enjoyed gardening, music, archery, bowling, other cultures, intrigue novels, and the wind in her hair – by ship, flight lessons, or charming her way into one last motorcycle ride in her mid-eighties. She held fast to her values & faith in God despite life’s obstacles and dogma. She liked a good laugh, all things bright and colorful, and would visit Lake Michigan to feed her soul.
Those close in her life received her loyalty, confidence, affection, wicked humor; big shoulders, rolled up sleeves; and could count on her ‘2 cents worth’ of opinion along with prayers for your protection. She will be greatly missed.
