Stephen Thomas Roberts, 70 of Ashton, MD died of Covid-19 January 12, 2022 at Montgomery General Hospital. He was owner of Fidelity Home Improvements and a roofer in the maintenance department for the Montgomery County Public Schools. He will be remembered as "Bronco Steve" in his family and among friends in the community.
He was born on April 29, 1951 at , Scott Air Force Baset. Clair County, Illinois and grew up in a military family. He attended St. Christopher's Preparatory School and John Lyon School for Boys near London, England when his father was stationed at South Ruislip as an air force officer. His little league baseball team placed second in the European championship game in Paris in 1963. He attended London Central High School (DODEA), Bushey Hall, England; Aurora Central High School, Aurora, Colorado and was a 1968 graduate of Woodson High School, Fairfax, Virginia. Steve introduced soccer, played varsity baseball and was on the wrestling team in high school. He attended and graduated from Eisenhower College, Seneca Falls, New York in 1972 with a major in political science.
Following college graduation, Steve explored the building and construction trades in Virginia, Colorado, Florida and Maryland. He was self-employed as a roofer and other building trades working outdoors on his own schedule. He was sensitive to people in need and volunteered his time helping people with home repairs. He will be remembered by his clients for his honesty and quality service as a roofer.
Steve ardently supported conservative causes and presidential candidates from the Republican Party. He was also active in his church and Bible study. "Bronco Steve" was an avid sports fan with memorabilia of autographed baseballs and jackets of the Baltimore Orioles and the Denver Broncos. His favorite pastimes were karaoke and darts in local sports bars such as Papa Nick's. Friends and family will remember him for witty sense of humor.
He married Meixia Yi from Fushun, China in 2008. The couple enjoyed traveling in China before settling in Montgomery County. Meixia owns a massage spa in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Steve frequently commuted back and forth to their Port St. Lucie home from Ashton to be with Meixia. He enjoyed the beach, golf and his favorite restaurants such as IHop and the Longhorn Steakhouse in Florida.
Steve is survived by his mother, Genevieve Roberts; his wife, Meixia Yi; his sister, Betty Roberts; his nephew, Mark Stone; and two great nephews Antonio and Liam, whom he affectionately nicknamed 'Tony T' and 'Mr. Lee'. He was predeceased by his father, Thomas C. Roberts.
The funeral service is scheduled for Friday, January 21, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Hines-Rinandi Funeral Home, 11800 New Hampshire Ave., Silver Spring, MD 20904.
