He leaves his wife of 45 years, Rona (Tsu) Sun; his sons, Varnum (Cecilia) Ouyang and Marvin (Hillary Tennant) Sun; his daughter Karen (Pete) Bruzzo; and his thirteen grandchildren: Suzanne Ouyang, Kathleen Ouyang, William Ouyang, John Paul Ouyang, Anna Rita Ouyang, Josephina Ouyang, Evan Sun, Tate Sun, Gideon Sun, Theo Sun, Avery Bruzzo, Nathaniel Bruzzo and Mae Bruzzo. Peter also leaves behind his brothers and sisters: John Sun, Helen Fan, Kuo-Ray Wang, Godwin Sun, Steve Sun, Kuo-ling Wong, many nieces and nephews, and many close friends. Peter was predeceased by his parents Sun Chijen and Peng Yousheng.
Peter was born July 19, 1935 in Suqian Jiangsu, China and later grew up in Taizhong, Taiwan. He attended the National Taiwan University and graduated in 1957 with a B.A. in History. In 1960, he moved to the United States to continue his graduate studies, obtaining a Masters Degree in History from the University of Wisconsin in 1964. Peter then moved to Maryland, where he met his future wife, Rona. He began his career at the Central Intelligence Agency, where he worked for 36 years. He received numerous awards, including the Al Gore Hammer Award in 2000. He retired later that year.
Peter lived his life fully and enjoyed many passions. Opera singing was his favorite past time. He was part of the Potomac Three Tenors, a trio formed in 2003 that performed locally around Maryland. Peter founded the Ching-Yung Solo singing Society in 1999. He also loved to travel, play mahjong with friends and brag about his grandchildren.
Calling hours will be held at 10:00 AM, August 21, 2015. A funeral service will follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Peter’s honor to the Washington Hospital Center.
