George D Steck

George D. Steck, 89, of Sikeston, passed away October 11, 2024. He was born January 17, 1935 to George W. and Helen High Steck in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 52 years, Jeannette Elizabeth Hoppenjans Steck, his son, George Herbert Steck of Denton, Texas, and his sister Helen Troy Vessells of Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

He is survived by his sister, Ruth Ann Steck of Kansas City, Missouri, and three daughters: Sara A. Love (Glenn, deceased) of Sikeston, Mary E. Lassiter (Frank) of Midway, Kentucky, and Pamela K. Steck of Oak Point, Texas. He has five grandchildren: Daniel M. Love, Mary Beth Niehaus, George B. Lassiter, Brice D. Love, and Jayna R. Love, and nine great grandchildren: Abigayle Love, Donnie Humphreys, Jasmine Greene, Zachary Love, Michael Love, Maddie Love, Dylan Niehaus, Dawson Niehaus, and Emily Niehaus.

He graduated from Central High School in Cape Girardeau in 1953, and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War serving as a company clerk to a unit unloading supply ships for the Air Force in Thule, Greenland.

He married the love of his life, Jeannette Hoppenjans of Cape Girardeau on May 9, 1958. Her light continued to shine in his eyes long after her death in 2010. They raised a beautiful and growing family.

He graduated from Southeast Missouri State College in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration, and served as President of Tau Kappa Epsilon, Delta Zeta Chapter.

His professional career reflected a commitment to service as most of his working years benefitted Phillips Petroleum Company, serving as a marketing representative from 1960 - 1991.

He was active in his church, the community, and the golf course. A member of St. Francis Xavier Church in Sikeston, he served as a commentator, lector, extraordinary minister, School Board member, and a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He was Grand Knight and Secretary of the Knights of Columbus 3151 Council.

He served on the Speaker’s Bureau of New Hampshire Petroleum Council, the Scott County Board of Developmental Disabilities and the Sikeston City Board of Adjustment.

He even served others through his love of golf serving as Secretary of the Sikeston Country Club, Senior Golf League. He loved the game and was so sad when no longer able to play.

He loved his family with all his heart and found ways to help them to his last breath.

Visitation will take place at Nunnelee Funeral Chapel from 9:00 to 10:45 a.m. on Tuesday, October 15, 2024 with the funeral at 11:00 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Lunch will be provided by the church, with burial following at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Pallbearers will be Frank Lassiter, Ben Lassiter, Daniel Love, and Brice Love.
