Shreveport, LA- Welton Lamar Smith, Jr., age 79, passed away on the evening of Saturday, September 28, 2013, at Promise Hospital in Bossier City, La. Funeral services celebrating his life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 in the chapel of Centuries Memorial Funeral Home in Shreveport, La. Interment will follow in Centuries Memorial Park. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 1, 2013 from the hours of 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home.
Lamar was born on July 17, 1934 in Laurel, Mississippi. He was a well respected teacher and band director in the Bossier Parish School System, retiring after 20 years of service. He was a talented musician, playing in the Shreveport Symphony, the Centenary Summer Band, the Bill Causey Big Band, and with many other groups. He enjoyed his music, fishing, and being with his family and pets. He was a loving husband and friend.
Lamar was preceded in death by his parents, Frances Anderson Smith and Welton Lamar Smith, Sr., and stepson, Raymond Carl Pyatt.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 25 years, Patricia Anne Smith, stepsons, Gregory Patrick Pyatt of Doyline, La., Steven Christopher Pyatt of Shreveport, La., and aunt, Mable McEwen of Rainbow City, Alabama.
