Shreveport, LA - Steven (“Steve”) Perry Whatley, 62 and a lifelong resident of Shreveport/Bossier, passed away Wednesday, March 23, 2016, following a courageous battle with brain cancer. Steve was preceded in death by his brother Daniel Whatley, and his parents Charles and Betty Whatley. He is survived by his sister Jobeth Whatley Devereaux (Dennis), his wife Phyllis Collum Whatley and her sisters and their families, Carolyn Powers, Martha Adams (James), Glenda Delrie (Joe), Mae Hall (Bob), Karen Schilling (John), Sharon Teakell, five nephews, nine nieces, fifteen great-nephews and thirteen great-nieces, and his lifelong friend William “Buddy” Woodward.
Steve was a registered nurse and during his career worked at Louisiana State University Medical Center, Christus Schumpert Medical Center, and Willis-Knighton South. Steve was the co-founder of Hand in Paw-Friends of Bossier City Animal Control, a nonprofit organization established to facilitate pet adoptions and to assist with the medical care of animals housed at Bossier City Animal Control. He was also an avid reader and gun enthusiast.
Phyllis would like to thank Christus Schumpert Hospice and his caregivers, Sheira Foster, Tamika Atkins, Tronja “Nikki” Hall, April Foster, Sharieka Phillips, and Marie King.
Visitation will be at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home on Mansfield Road on Tuesday, April 5, 2016 from 12:00-1:00 p.m., with a graveside service immediately following to be officiated by Dr. B.J. “Rocky” Maddox.
