Matt attended Byrd High School, graduating in 2011. While in college at Louisiana Tech, he reacquainted with an old friend, Katie Johnson, and they began dating in 2013. The couple married in 2016. Matt attended graduate school at LSU School of Allied Health. In 2018, he received his Doctorate of Physical Therapy. Matt worked as a Physical Therapist at several facilities in the area, including The Therapy Center and Willis Knighton.
Matt became a Christian at a young age and strived to be a witness for Christ to others. He never took a day for granted; lived life to it's fullest, without fear. He was an adventurous outdoorsman and loved all types of hunting and fishing. The love of the outdoors was a family tradition passed down from generations. He had already began sharing this with his 1 year-old boys, Gunner and Gauge. Matt's short life was full of many meaningful relationships. He was a devoted son and friend. He was the best husband and dad to his wife and their boys.
Matt is survived by his wife, Katie Johnson Rushing; sons Gunner Tate and Gauge Taylor Rushing; parents Bob and Joni Rushing; father and mother-in-law Dennis and Lisa Johnson; sister-in-law Brandy Johnson and her husband Garrett Johnson; grandmother Merle Yvonne Thompson; nieces Sadie Johnson and Lilah Johnson.
Matt was preceded in death by his brother Jason; grandparents Bennie and Evelyn Rushing, grandfather Jimmy Thompson, and aunt Debbie Baskin.
