June Fess was born on June 12, 1921 in Evansville, Illinois. She was the sixth child of Ora and Eunice Fess. Her father Ora Fess was employed by Ohio Oil Company and June grew up in Haynesville, Louisiana and graduated from Haynesville High School in 1938. She went to beauty school in Shreveport, Louisiana, and met, James B. Walton Jr., her future husband while she was working as a telephone operator with the phone company in Shreveport. He entered the military in World War II and fought as a P-51 mustang pilot in North Africa. He wanted to marry before he left for service but they waited until he returned and married December 3, 1943.
They were both faithful members of the Church of Christ until their deaths, his in 1972, and her on February 3, 2020. In February of 2012, because of her health, she moved to Searcy, Arkansas and lived with her son and daughter in law until 2018. At that time, she lost her mobility and moved to The Crossing Nursing Care Home in Searcy until her death.
She loved the Lord with all of her heart and her soul, and she loved to read the Bible. She literally wore out several Bibles through study and filled pages with notes. She loved people and never met a stranger!
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Anita June Wilkerson (Tommy), James B. Walton III (Vicki), and John Keith Walton (Derona), and son in law Ted Awtry; 11 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James B. Walton Jr.; daughter, Cheryl Louise Awtry; grandson, James Ryan Walton; parents; Ora Fess and Eunice Fess; brothers, Paul Fess, Vaughn Fess, Don Fess, Max Fess and Gerald Fess; and sister, Evelyn Fess Kendrick.
A visitation for June will be held Saturday, February 8, 2020 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM followed by a celebration of her life beginning at 11:00 AM at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home. Pastor Floyd Johnson, Minister of Huntington Park Church of Christ in Shreveport, Louisiana, will be officiating the services. Honoring her as pallbearers will be Logan Calhoun, Tommy Wilkerson, Ted Awtry, Brett Walton, Don Davis, Ivan Gomez.
