John Robert Turley of Flower Mound, Texas went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, September 21, 2022 at the age of 95. He was born February 25, 1927 in Ada, Oklahoma to the late Nellie Grace Moore Turley and William Earl Turley.
In 1945, John graduated from Ada High School. Upon his graduation, he honorably served in the US Navy during the last months of WWII. After his service, he attended and graduated from what is now, Oklahoma State University with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He was recalled to service with the Navy during the Korean War. John served both tours at the naval shipyard in Bremerton, Washington repairing and installing electronics into battleships and heavy cruisers.
John married the love of his life, Wanda, in Ada, Oklahoma on December 20, 1952. Together they shared 69 wonderful years of marriage and three sons that they adored. Upon his release from service and marriage, John and Wanda moved to Shreveport, Louisiana, where they lived until September of 2016. He began his employment with Southwestern Electric Power Company where he worked as an electrical engineer until his retirement in 1982.
John was a very active member of Shreve City Baptist Church. He served the Lord with gladness and in various ministries including being an active church deacon since 1957, sang tenor beautifully in the choir, taught Men's Sunday School Class, ran the church library, and fixed and maintained any electrical or audio equipment for the church. After moving to assisted living in Flower Mound, John continued to serve by leading singing at worship services, conducting church services via Zoom during the COVID outbreak and teaching Bible Study class.
John loved his sons, their wives, his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was an avid reader. He conducted many hours of genealogical research and taught others how to get started on their family trees. He was a Ham radio operator and would help friends by repairing old books and family Bibles. John was an excellent bookbinder. He will be deeply missed by those he loved and those influenced by his kindness and faithfulness.
Left to cherish his memory are his sons, John Paul Turley and wife, Julie, Mark Turley and wife, Linda and David Turley; grandsons, Steve Turley, Daniel Turley and wife, Joanna and Matthew Turley and wife, Susan; granddaughters, Laura Standridge and husband, Nyles and Kelley Francis and her husband, Kelly; great grandchildren, Brook Turley, Alice Turley, Barrett Standridge, Calan Standridge and Lochlan Standridge; sister, Mary Nell Turley Ross and several nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Jean Rancier Turley and his parents.
A visitation for John will be held Thursday, September 29, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Shreve City Baptist Church, 2810 Knight St., Shreveport, Louisiana 71104, followed by a Celebration of Life at 11:00 AM. Officiating the service will be Deacons of Shreve City Baptist Church, Tom Cole and Jim Rabb. He will be laid to rest in Centuries Memorial Park, 8801 Mansfield Rd., Shreveport, Louisiana 71108.
