Shreveport, LA Harold Alton Smith was born December 6, 1926 in Brookhaven, MS, his parents were Mary and O.C. Smith. He passed away November 26, 2015 in Shreveport.
Mr. Smith entered the Navy at 16 years old. He served during WWII Luzon Operation, Manila Bay-Bicol Operation and the Okinawa Gunto Operation as a radio operator on the USS Appling. There is a plaque honoring him in the National Museum of the Pacific War, Fredricksburg, TX. He was a longtime resident of Longview, TX, attending LeTourneau University there and working for LeTourneau Corp. He moved to Shreveport in 1975 and continued his career as a Master Machinist.
Mr. Smith is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and two sisters. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Alice Nell Newland Smith; two sons, Harold Wayne Smith and Robert Conway Smith and his wife Barbara; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one great great-grandchild; several other relatives and many friends.
A service celebrating the life of Harold Alton Smith will be held Wednesday, December 2, 2015, 2:00 PM at Northwest LA Veterans Cemetery, Keithville, LA. Visitation with the family will be from 5 until 7 Tuesday, December 1, 2015 at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home, Shreveport, LA.
