Gregory Lee Slayton, a lifelong resident of Shreveport, Louisiana passed away on Thursday, December 17, 2020 at the age of 69. He was born July 13, 1951 to Olon Leon Slayton and Virginia Davis Slayton. He was a Mama’s boy and his Daddy’s pal.
He was a proud supporter of his Alma Mater, the Woodlawn Knights and the Waskom Wildcats. He retired from Bell South as a Cable Repair Technician after many years. Greg was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was very athletic, spending some time coaching. He was also a Co-founder of East Texas Youth Association in Waskom, TX.
In his younger years he loved to fight and would “stomp a mud hole in their a** and walk it dry”. He could outdrink the best until he found Serenity, Strength, Courage and Wisdom in His Higher Power. His beverages of choice since 1988 were coffee with one ice cube and two sweet n lows while solving the daily crossword puzzle and a tall sweet tea as he won while watching Jeopardy. Greg was like a walking encyclopedia who could beat anyone at Trivial Pursuit, Scrabble and Jeopardy. He was a master of four letter words. He had a love affair with sweets, his recliner and football while rooting for the LSU Tigers and the Dallas Cowboys. He had a fondness for Hank, Willie, Waylon and George. You might catch him dancing and on occasion doing the James Brown.
Greg married his high school sweetheart, Sharon Flores, on February 20, 1971 and together had their three children. He was a good man with a big heart, a big teddy bear and a prankster. He was always laughing. He was also a hard working man who provided, protected and loved his family. Greg was a loyal friend known by many as Bear, Spanky, Papa Smurf and Surefoot but known most proudly by his family as Big Cat Paw Paw and Dad. He will now watch over them from above.
Left to cherish his memory are his three children, Kim Scarbrough-Slayton (Kasi), Zach Slayton (Joanna) and Amy Hutchinson (Brian); seven grandchildren, Hunter Slayton, Garrett Slayton, Reagen Slayton, Mary Marcela Slayton, Caden Hutchinson, Kathryn Hutchinson and Gage Hutchinson; sister, Denise Shofner (Ricky); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Greg was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Larry Davis Slayton and Dennis Wayne Slayton.
A visitation for Gregory will be held Tuesday, December 22, 2020 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home. A celebration of life at the Pavilion at Centuries Memorial Park will occur Tuesday, December 22, 2020 at 2:00 PM. Officiating the service will be Bro. Eric Johnson. Serving as pallbearers will be Jay Nissen, Jeffrey Nissen, Brian Hutchinson, Chad Rose, Evan Shofner, Paul Turnage and Caden Hutchinson.
