Funeral Mass is under the direction of Buffington Funeral Home in Shiner, Texas and will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, July 18, 2014 at Saints Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Shiner, Texas with Father Kirby Hlavaty officiating. Interment will follow at the Shiner Catholic Cemetery in Shiner, Texas. A Rosary will be recited on Thursday, July 17, 2014 at 7:00 pm at the Buffington Funeral Home Chapel in Shiner, Texas with Deacon Joe Machacek officiating.
Marlene was born on September 18, 1936 in Yoakum, Texas. She was the daughter of Herbert and Wilma (Buesing) Wendel. Marlene attended Saint Joseph’s Catholic School in Yoakum, Texas through the fifth grade before her family moved to Shiner, Texas where they owned and operated Wendel’s Jewelry for thirty years. Marlene continued her education at Saint Ludmila’s Academy in Shiner, Texas. She was the Salutatorian for her class of 1954. She then entered Our Lady of the Lake University in 1958 and graduated as one of the three graduates with High Honors. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics. Marlene Wendel married Dr. Patrick J. Wagner on July 26, 1958. They resided in Galveston while Dr. Pat completed his Medical Training at the University of Texas Medical School. During this time, Marlene was President of the Nu Sigma Nu Wives. After Dr. Pat received his Medical Degree, he joined the USAF and they lived in San Antonio for three years. Dr. Pat and Marlene moved back to Shiner in 1964 and Dr. Pat joined the Wagner Medical Partnership with his brothers, Dr. Robert J. Wagner and Dr. John Dennis Wagner. Marlene was active in school affairs. She was chairman of the Fall Festival for two years, chairman of the Parents Band Club for two years, and served three years as a Den Mother. Marlene was involved in the community, having served as President of the DeWitt-Lavaca Medical Auxiliary, and chairman of the Shiner Catholic Church Picnic Bazaar for nine years, following in her mother-in law’s footsteps. Her sister-in-law, Marthe Wagner assisted her with the Bazaar. She headed the Cystic Fibrosis Fund for one year.
Marlene is survived by three sons; Jeffrey Patrick Wagner and his wife, Debbie of Shiner, Texas, John Wendel Wagner of Austin, Texas, Jason Gerard Wagner and his wife, Joyce of Shiner, Texas, two daughters; Judy Beth Daily of Shiner, Texas, Jill Marie Heard and her husband, Danny of Victoria, Texas, thirteen grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; Herbert and Wilma Wendel, and her loving husband of forty-one years, Dr. Patrick J. Wagner.
