She was the youngest of 10 children and grew up on a farm during the Great Depression, enduring a harsh environment, scarce resources, but enjoying the blessings of a deeply religious, loving family.
Betty attended Varnum High School as an Honor Society student, but the necessity to work on the farm prevented her graduation. Her determination to complete her education resulted in her passing the GED exam years later at the age of 64. As a teenager she worked as a waitress at the Cottage Café in Shawnee. She worked as a bookkeeper for Goodyear Tire and Rubber in the early 1950’s and later worked as a clerk typist at Tinker Air Force Base.
Betty married Wendell Rogers in Shawnee on March 18, 1957. He was a disabled veteran of World War II, and he passed away on February 9, 1986.
Betty enjoyed playing the piano, raising vegetables in her garden, and reading the Bible. She also enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and writing and receiving letters. She obtained her amateur radio (HAM) license in 2005 and served several years using those skills as a volunteer for Shawnee Emergency Management Department. She lived a simple but fulfilling life and lived at the same address in Shawnee for the past 63 years.
Betty was a Christian and a devoted member of Faith Assembly Church in Shawnee and regretted that her failing health prevented her from attending church regularly, but it did not prevent her continued tithing.
Betty is survived by her sister, Lillian Carpenter, age 97 of Tulsa, Oklahoma and a multitude of nieces, nephews and extended family members. Those preceding her in death include her husband, Wendell, and their infant daughter, LaVonne, who died the day of her birth, July 28, 1962. She was also predeceased by her parents, John and Nora Shoemaker, and by siblings, Daniel, Blanche, Leonard, Johnie, Willard, and Arthur Shoemaker, and Virgie Lemmings and Pauline Fowler.
Visitation is 8:00am-5:00pm, Wednesday, April 25, 2018 and 8:00am-5:00pm, Thursday, April 26, 2018 at Resthaven Funeral Home. A memorial service for Mrs. Rogers will be held Friday, April 27 at 10:00 AM at Faith Assembly Church, 1415 East MacArthur in Shawnee with Pastor Kurt Beauford officiating. Burial will follow at Tecumseh Cemetery. Funeral services are under the director of Resthaven Funeral Home of Shawnee and messages of condolence may be made at www.resthavenfh.com.
