Rachel was born October 14, 1934 in Brunswick county NC. She was the daughter of the late Earlie E. and Rethea Long Evans. She is preceded in death by her husband, of forty-three years, the Reverend Lonzia James Benton, her second husband Charles Edgar Moore, her four brothers; Odell Evans, Thurman Evans, Willie Evans, Reverend Eugene Evans, and her sister Aileen Galloway. She was employed at James Walker Memorial Hospital and New Hanover Regional Medical Center for over twenty-nine years as a laboratory medical technologist. She was actively involved in multiple positions in all of the churches that were pastored by her first husband Reverend Lonzia Benton. Rachel enjoyed gardening, being involved in church activities, traveling, but most of all; spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed having her family over for the holidays for a grand meal. Rachel could often be seen walking her beloved puppy Emma around the Ashley Park neighborhood.
Surviving are her three children; Darlene Benton Peay and husband Jimmy, Kathie Benton Wheeler and husband Harvey, and Steve Benton and wife Julann, five grandchildren; Thomas Rooks, Mathew Rooks, Laura Terry and husband Lloyd, Dr. Evan Wheeler and wife Alexandria, and Tanner Benton, and great-granddaughter Harper Wheeler, her sister Annie Laura Long, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday October 24, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Wrightsboro Baptist Church 2736 Castle Hayne Road with the Reverend Billy Fowler, Reverend Phil Frady and Greg White officiating.
A private burial service will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery on Monday October 25, 2021 at 1:00 PM.
Pallbearers will be the Men’s Sunday School Class from Wrightsboro Baptist Church.
In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Wrightsboro Baptist Church Building Fund.
