Alsace Lorraine Cheek of Seguin, Texas went to be with her Lord and Savior on October 22, 2010 at the age of 91 years. She was born in Sayre, OK on April 10, 1919to Claude D. Howell and Dora Wilson Howell. In 1936 Lorraine graduated Erick High School in Erick, OK. She began her studies at Oklahoma Baptist Hospital in Muskogee, OK in August of 1936, and on May 14, 1939 she graduated from Oklahoma Baptist Hospital with a Registered Nursing Degree. Shortly after graduation she accepted a position at the Detroit Osteopathic Hospital in Detroit, MI. For three years, during World War II, she stopped working as a nurse and started a career as “Rosie the Riviter, because she could earn more in one week than she could in one month as a nurse. In 1947, the family relocated to Seguin, TX, where she began working for the Medical Center for Dr. Robert Knolle, Dr. Jesse Williams and Dr. George Bachman, and part time at the old Seguin hospital as Assistant Director of Nurses. In August of 1965, the new Guadalupe Valley Hospital opened its doors with Lorraine Howell Bryan as the first Director of Nurses. She brought to this position 26 years of nursing experience; with continuing education at Texas Lutheran College and Texas League of Nursing advanced workshops. She was also a member of the American Nurses Association, Texas Nurses Association and District Eight Nurses Association. She worked with Randolph Brooks AFB civil service as a staff nurse then moved to the clinical division. Alsace was also the first female nurse to accompany the Surveyors on Nursing Home Inspections. Alsace loved people and caring for others. After nearly 60 years of nursing, Lorraine retired her Nursing License in 1997. Lorraine was an extraordinary woman; she touched many, many lives. As a mother she was a warm, giving and always loving, and above all a great friend and we had lots of great times. We are all so blessed to have been loved by her. She provided a stable background and steady influence throughout the years. We were truly blessed to have a mother we admired, respected and who supported us to achieve our goals in life. A courageous lady with a wonderful sense of humor, a strong sense of family and will always be remembered. Thanksgiving at Omi’s was a family tradition. May there be many stars in her crown. Alsace is survived by her loving family; children, Roger Howell Bryan and wife Jo, Susan Elaine Sibley and husband Richard and Patricia K. Newberry; extended family, John N. Bryan and wife Sandra and family, Jay Cheek and wife Brenda and family, Chris Denver and wife Brooke; grandchildren, Shari and husband Tom Trost, Robert A. and wife Tammy Newberry, Chad C. and wife Ashlie Bryan, Jason L. and wife Abbie Beane, Mark Cheek and wife Nadia and Wendie Bryan and A.J. Salazar; great grandchildren, Brant Trost, Patricia Nelsen, Bret Johnson and wife Presley, Cayla Newberry and Cavin Newberry; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Stanley and Mary King; Niece Jan Howell and family, and many other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, brothers; Douglas C. Howell, Wymon L. Howell and wife May, nephew Mike Howell.
