Born on January 24, 1931, in Nantong (Jiangsu Province), China to Winston and Wen-Ying Hu Chen. The eldest of six children, he always embraced his role as a devoted son and big brother, caring for his entire family.
In 1949, he finished his secondary education in Guangzhou, China and later attended Taiwan University. He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree at the University of Santo Tomas in the Philippines.
In 1954, Schofield arrived in the United States via New York, making his way to attend the University of Tennessee. He earned his Master of Science Degree in Civil Engineering. In 1957, Schofield accepted a job with the Boeing Company, bringing him to Seattle. It was there that he met his future wife, Mary Theresa Tran. Together they also owned and operated a small grocery store for several years while starting their family.
Schofield retired from Boeing after working 35 years. Schofield worked on many important projects to include the 747 airplane and other various airliners. Over the last 10 years of his career, he was based in China and was Boeing’s customer support liaison to both Shanghai and Xiamen Airlines.
Throughout his life, Schofield loved to hike, play games to test his luck, travel the world, and focus his time and energy on his family.
Schofield is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Theresa; his five siblings, Lily Tsai, Anna Seto, David (Debbie) Chen, Kent (Lily) Chen, and Michael (Linda) Chen; his four children, Mary Ann Knell, Jeffrey (Shawn Whitney) Chen, Bea (John) Hanson, and Della (Ryan) Chen Gilchrist; 10 grand children, Melissa (Ryan) Sours, Alexander Knell, Zachary (Taryn Smith) Hanson, Diana (Joshua) Angeles, Vanessa Chen, Noah Hanson, Mary Elizabeth Knell, Anthony Chen, Henry Gilchrist, and Georgia Gilchrist; and one great grand child, Elijah Kalani Chen Angeles.
In spite of the toll taken by cancer, Schofield Chen, a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great grandfather patiently held on to life in order to joyfully welcome and bless the fourth generation of his wonderful family. He will be remembered in our hearts forever and is now in heaven.
