Sandra Halloween Haywood was born October 31, 1941 at home in Ballard, Washington to Martin and Gertrude Hennum (nee Heggum). Sandy, as she was known, was the sixth of eight children. Martin and Gertrude raised their family in Ballard, where Sandy attended Whittier Grade School and Ballard High School (class of 1959).
Sandy met Earl Stahl through a mutual friend. They soon married and had three children together; Katherine in 1959, Earl Jr. in 1962, and Stacey in 1967. Sandy and Earl Sr. made their family home in Oak Harbor on Whidbey Island, Washington. Both worked at the Oak Harbor Navy Base. Earl Sr. as a barber and Sandy in the commissary. Unfortunately, their marriage would not last as was it simply not to be.
In 1985, Sandy married Wesley Haywood. Together they started several businesses in the Crown Hill neighborhood of Seattle. Wes, as he was known, was a barber and he talked Sandy into attending barber school. She graduated with excellency and quickly became an award winning meticulous men’s hairstylist. Her skill and passion garnered her win of several awards throughout her career.
Sandy loved her family dearly. She was a ferocious protector of her children, eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She enjoyed spending time with them, helping with their care and then some, whenever they may have needed.
In her later years, Sandy and her close friend Carol would go on long drives for the day, exploring new areas of the Pacific Northwest. If they saw a thrift shop or cute local restaurant, the brakes were abruptly applied and they would soon be browsing or having a delicious meal. For Sandy and Carol, daytrips were a favorite pastime in like.
When Sandy and Carol weren’t adventuring, they could be found sharing lunches with their close friends from high school. They would reminisce about their crazy fun times in the 50’s! Sandy enjoyed her wine and cocktails. Everyone knew that if she ordered a second… it was time to leave before the third – Sandy was outspoken, loved a good debate and could be quite “verbal and argumentative.”
She passed away peacefully at her home in Shoreline, Washington in the early hours of September 3, 2023 at the age of 81. Though she is deeply loved and sorely missed, she left us with these beautiful words…
Miss Me But Let Me Go
When I come to the end of the road
And the sun has set for me
I want no rites in a gloom filled room,
Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a little-but not too long
And not with your head bowed low.
Remember the love that we once shared.
Miss me-but let me go.
For this is a journey the we all must take,
and each must go alone.
It’s all a part of the master’s plan,
A step on the road to home.
When you are lonely and sick of heart,
Go to friends we know.
And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds.
Miss me-but let me go.
