Richard Neal Pahre

Dick was born in the family home on October 30, 1940, in St. Charles, Iowa, to Phillip Wendell and Helene (Drake) Pahre, the oldest of three sons. His family relocated to Seattle when he was three. He loved the outdoors, and was a very early member of the REI Coop. He climbed Mount Rainier and several other glaciated peaks before he was 17.

He was graduated from Queen Anne High School and then earned a degree in Accountancy from the University of Washington, where he was also a member of the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity.

After graduating, he worked as a Certified Public Accountant at Price Waterhouse and Moss Adams LLP, ultimately serving as an Audit Partner at Moss Adams from August 1975 to December 2002. His colleagues remember him as a valued mentor and as an early advocate for women in the profession. Due to his remarkable institutional knowledge, Moss Adams commissioned him to write the history of the firm (A Century in the Books), which he completed during his retirement.

In addition to his accounting work, he donated many hours to various charities, and he served in leadership positions in both the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. He was President of the Seattle Downtown Central Lions Club in 1985-86. Sunset Elementary School awarded him a Golden Apple for his work on behalf of the school and district. Dick was also active on citizen committees for the City of Shoreline. He was most proud of his 25 years volunteering at Seattle Goodwill, where he served on the Board of Directors.

Dick married Janice Nikoline Halsan on October 1, 1960, and the pair eventually made their home in Shoreline, Washington, in 1970. Dick was a devoted father and grandfather, and he particularly delighted in the educational achievements of his children and grandchildren. He and Janice traveled extensively in the United States and abroad, visiting many historic sites and places of natural beauty.

Dick is survived by Janice, his wife of fifty-nine years; by two brothers, Jeffrey (Patricia) and John (Julie); by his three sons, Robert (Jennifer), Steven, and Michael (Suzanne), and his daughter, Kathleen (Tony) Pahre-Andrade; by his eight grandchildren, Jay, Eric, Alec, Meaghan, Casey, Brian, Matthew, and Zachary; and his dog Bonne. Dick is remembered with love and respect by his family, by his colleagues, and by his friends, neighbors, and fellow dog walkers.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Seattle Goodwill.
