Mary Hirata Iwago

Mary Hirata Iwago passed away on April 27, 2023 at Hearthside Manor in University Place, Washington. Born in Wenatchee, Washington on November 27, 1926, Mary was the youngest of six children. She married Osamu Hirata on December 11, 1947. They adopted two children, Beverly Jean and Rodney Alexander. They were married until Osamu’s passing in 1987. On July 16, 2010 Mary married long-time partner, Steve Iwago.

Mary worked at the Space Needle for 20 years where she not only served as a waitress, but also did the Christmas decorations. Mary also worked at Ben Bridge Jewelers until she was in her 80s. Mary was a very talented seamstress and crafter. Among her many projects were quilts, placemats, candles, and elegantly decorated eggs.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband Osamu Hirata, her second husband Steve Iwago, and her son Rodney Hirata. She is survived by her daughter, Beverly Cheney, son-in-law, Donald Cheney, sister-in-law, Michi Hirata, and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Heron’s Key Benevolent Fund (4340 Borgen Blvd Gig Harbor, WA 98332) or the Hearthside Manor Life Enrichment Fund (3614 Drexler Dr. W University Place, WA 98466). A family service will be held on Saturday, June 3 at 1:00pm at Evergreen Washelli Funeral Home, 11111 Aurora Ave N, Seattle, Washington 98133.
