Joe passed away in Federal Way, WA on March 1, 2017 at the age of 78. He was born in Seattle on February 14, 1939; the only child of Joseph and Bernice Zimmerman. He was baptized and raised Catholic, and like his father, served as a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus.
He was an alumnus of St. Teresa (‘52) and Seattle Prep (’56); popular in drama, football, and debate. A graduate of U. Arizona (’60) with a BA in Business/Life Insurance; member of Phi Kappa Theta, ROTC, Pershing Rifles, & Scabbard and Blade. Also, a graduate of U. Washington Law School (’63), and member of Phi Alpha Delta.
An attorney for nearly 50 years including 20+ years as Legal Advisor for King County Police, Reserve Officer program, instructor Washington State Law & Justice Training Commission, Judge pro tempore, & Assistant Gen. Counsel Olympic National Life Insurance. He was a member of many industry organizations including WASPC, WAPA, WSRDSPOA, and IACP.
30-year military career began with USAR 136th Military Intelligence detachment at Ft. Lawton, eventually retiring as a Colonel working in CIC at The Pentagon. Member of ACICV, NCICA, and US Army ROA.
A loving father, generous friend, and compassionate person. Could make anyone laugh, and was known to burst into song at random. Heaven is a better place now that he is home.
He is survived by Margrit Zimmerman, devoted mother to his children; sons Joseph III (Jay), Martin, and Paul; and grandchildren Jessie and Hans-Jürgen.
Services are scheduled for Saturday, March 18, 2017, 11:00 am at St Brendan Catholic Church, Bothell, WA with interment to follow at Acacia Memorial Park, Seattle, WA.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in Joe’s honor to the Wounded Warrior Project and Behind the Badge Foundation.
