Jean Bernice Haugen Hansen passed on June 10, 2022 in Seattle. Jean was born on June 10, 1927 in Seattle to parents Olaf Martin Haugen and Ragna Elisabet Starheim Haugen and lived in the Wallingford neighborhood. Jean graduated from Lincoln High School (Seattle) in 1945. She then graduated from the University of Washington School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse in 1949. Jean worked at Northgate General Hospital as a post-operative nurse and later at Group Health Hospital in the neo-natal intensive care unit.
It was at Immanuel Lutheran church that Jean met Arthur Norman Hansen. Jean and Norm married August 25, 1951. They lived in the View Ridge neighborhood all their married life and raised three children. Growing up, Jean’s family did not own a car, but walked, took the street car, or knew all the bus routes across town. Only after marrying Norm did Jean learn to drive and the two bought an English Austin, so Jean could get around with the children. There was no looking back.
The Hansen family became members of Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church in the late 1960’s, where Jean and Norm sang in the Senior Choir. Jean, an alto and Norm, a bass singer. They were lucky enough to have traveled with the Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church Senior Choir to Germany and Italy.
Both Jean and Norm were first generation Norwegian Americans. In the mid 1970’s they were able to travel to Norway to meet their family there for the first time. Jean and Norm were members of the Sons of Norway Lodge and Jean volunteered at the Kaffestua and other Leif Erickson Lodge events; her specialty making waffles. Jean also was a member of the Astridklubben, a Norwegian Nurses group. One notable event was meeting the King and Queen of Norway on a Royal Visit at Leif Erikson Lodge, October, 1995.
Jean is survived by her children, son Eric (Jane), son Steven and daughter Gail, grandson Todd (Sara), grandson Leif (Heide), great grandsons Clark and Wyatt, great granddaughters Audrey and Josephine. Jean was preceded in death by sister Ruth (2007) and husband Norm in 2008.
Jean’s family wishes to give the greatest appreciation to the Ida Culver House Broadview Terrace staff for the attention and affection they gave to Jean. They became part of her family. Appreciation also goes out to Kline Galland Hospice Services whose guidance and assistance was a great comfort.
