Dorothy Jean Sledge was born in Grandfield, Oklahoma on November 1, 1943 to the parents of Nathaniel and Thresia Sledge. In 1946 her family moved to Seattle, Washington. Dorothy attended Bailey Gazert Elementary school, Washington Middle School and graduated from Garfield High School in 1962.
Dorothy was raised in a Christian home, her family joined the Church of God in Christ soon after coming to Seattle, under the direction of Reverend Causey. She sang in the choir and was an usher. Later in her adult life she became a member of Unity Church of God in Christ under pastor James E. Hicks. In 2017 Dorothy attended FAME South Church under reverend Barry Ray for a family celebration and soon after started attending.
