Derek Scott McDaniel Sr. a resident of Alexandria, Virginia was affectionately known as "D Mac" or "Dee Dee" to his family and friends. He was born January 19, 1973 in Seattle, Washington and peacefully transitioned into eternal rest at INOVA Alexandria Hospital, Alexandria, Virginia on Tuesday February 1, 2022. He was the son of the late Gloria J. McDaniel and Mr. Clarence H. McDaniel Jr. Derek grew up in a loving home with his parents and two sisters, Kim and Tami and attended the Maple Leaf Evangelical Church while living in Seattle. He received his formal education from the Seattle Public Schools and graduated in the class of 1991 from Ingraham High School. While attending Ingraham, Derek participated in many activities including varsity basketball, football and track.
After graduating from high school Derek joined his cousin Brian on the East Coast and attended Bowie State University, Bowie, Maryland. While at Bowie State he became a member of the Epsilon Sigma Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated in the Spring of 1993. Derek was a member of the Accounting Club and of the Student Advisory Board for the Career Services and Cooperative Education. He was employed on campus in the front office of Business and Finance and served as a tutor for accounting majors. Derek received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a concentration in accounting from the Bowie State University and he received his Masters of Science in Real Estate from Johns Hopkins University, Washington D.C.
Derek began his career as an accountant for King, King & Associates, Baltimore, Maryland. He was also employed with the state of Maryland as an Accountant II, the Controller's Office, Bowie State University; City Manager, City of Glenarden; and Treasurer/CFO, Town of Bladensburg. Having accepted a position as Comptroller with the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority on April 21, 2003, he relocated to Alexandria, Virginia. In 2014 Derek was promoted to the position of Director of Finance and Administration and remained in that position until his passing on Tuesday, February 1, 2022. Derek was a member of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials, and of the Housing Association, Inc. Southeast Regional Section 8.
Derek was an avid runner and often ran in the Marine Corps Marathon and the Army 10 miler. He also enjoyed running in the Rock N Roll Marathon series and competed in many different cities including Las Vegas, Washington DC, Chicago, Brooklyn, Raleigh, Philadelphia, Virginia Beach and Seattle. His favorite run as he often expressed was the Seattle Marathon "Because the hills really challenged my fitness". Derek was always focused on staying injury free and was the family's consultant on running gear and training techniques. He loved running and the "competitive bug" has now latched onto his son DJ who runs and plays soccer, basketball and baseball.
Derek was preceded in death by his Mother Gloria J. McDaniel, grandparents: Clarence McDaniel Sr, Frances McDaniel and Gloria Betts; Cousin Jacqueline McDaniel Montgomery.
Derek leaves to cherish his memory one son, Derek Scott McDaniel Jr. and his mother, Amy Stratton-McDaniel of Alexandria, Virginia; step-daughter, Alexis Stratton of Los Angeles, California; father, Clarence H. McDaniel, Jr. of Seattle, Washington; two sisters, Kimberly Burggraff (Tom) of Seattle, Washington and Tamara Perkins (Chris) of Vancouver, Washington; one nephew, Andrew Burggraff of Seattle, Washington; three nieces, Liza Perkins, Meg Perkins, and Katie Perkins of Vancouver, Washington; goddaughter, Joy McDaniel and her sister, Justice McDaniel of Fort Washington, Maryland; aunts: Marcia McDaniel of Tacoma, Washington; Cheryl Jung of Las Vegas, Nevada; and Ida Brandon of Bowie, Maryland; uncles: Michael J. McDaniel (Joyce) of Bowie, Maryland; Steven K. McDaniel (Shirley) of Tacoma, Washington; James C. Ferguson Jr. (Jeri) of Bothell, Washington; Ralph E. Ferguson (Diana) of Mill Creek, Washington; Charles Ingram Jr. of Silver Spring, Maryland; Carlton Gillard (Doris) of Mitchellville, Maryland; and several other family members and friends.
